Right, I know that there must be a really simple answer to this, and that you'll probably be going "duh", but:

is there any reason why you can't fake the referrer as being from a subdomain on your site, or even from a forum on your subdomain.
Also, is there any reason why you wouldn't use a subdomain to carry out all you BH deeds (apart from risk) ?

    e.g.

    hat.com is my site
    black.hat.com is my BH site/subdomain
    forums.hat.com is my WH site/domain

In this case, you would be sending people from black.hat.com to hat.com, but faking the referrer to look like the traffic was coming from forums.hat.com.

Is this just too risky, and any other problems with this.

Sorry for the stupid question :D

EDIT: I suppose it could cause problems if google indexes the BH subdomain.

From an SEO standpoint they MAY be as good as separate sites--depends on how/if they interlink and if Google has any way of distinguishing.

If you're sending traffic and expecting your affiliate manager to be checking up on you, then it may be a problem. They can search the site and figure out if both subdomains are controlled by you, and then penalize you/find your campaigns are using black-hat tactics. I would generally recommend against it.

Cool, thanks for the heads up.

How about having a forum as a subdomain on your affiliate site, purely as WH, and as your referral site/subdomain ?

Sure--as long as everything under the top level domain (i.e. the subdomains) are whitehat. It's worth getting 2 domains if you want to funnel blackhat through whitehat--$10 is definitely worth the security, haha.
