Lets say you have a mybrandname.com website with decent link portfolio, but not so great that it will rank for "Money Keyword". So, I go purchase moneykeyword.com URL and 301 redirect mybrandname.com to it. EMD algo notwithstanding, we know that Google still has some love for keyword domains.

If mybrandname.com were ranking say #25 on Google for "Money Keyword", could moneykeyword.com rank at #5?

    Your thoughts appreciated :)

It depends on the content you put on your EMD and the link profile you build for it. I don't think that your EMD will rank better than your brand domain just by redirecting the brand domain to the EMD and placing the same content on it. The EMD alone won't make any noticeable difference.

In my opinion, the only point of an EMD is that you can build a greater amount of optimized links for it without triggering algorithmic flags.

There are plenty of examples of EMDs that rank well for competitive keywords with a fraction of links a branded URL needs to rank, while not having many keyword optimized backlinks. With decent content that will pass Panda and link profile that looks natural, EMDs have an advantage over branded domains IMHO. If that be the case, will a branded domain name get the EMD boost after 301 redirecting to it?

If it happens so, wouldn't it be easy to purchase any expired/expiring website with decent link profile and redirect it to an EMD of the same niche to get the ranking boost?
