I have a strange feeling it's the lack of monetization that brings the readers in.
Youtube has more visitors, but when monetization met its enemy Adblock, it didn't matter as much anymore. Just my experience.

Please don't compare reddit to a scum site like youtube.

If you actually read the article, you would know its not for the lack of opportunities.

Youtube is.. I don't know how to say this nicely, but extremely boring, PG13, horribly shitty skits and comedy channels hub. It used to be a really nice viral video hub but now its just a painfully unfunny people doing skits for 13yo'ds, I presume, and youtube promoting the shit out of them. Its no longer random content from around the world, from people we don't know about shit we never knew existed. Besides it being a cash cow for a lot of people, the site sucks shit. I do stuff with youtube, so I don't have an account, where I follow people and stuff. Going to youtube, trying to find content without sign-in in, is just fucking terribly impossible. All there is are just the same 10 people making skits, 2 comedy channels, fucking vevo, sports and thats it.

And also, I live outside of US so I don't get any ad's ever, can't imagine what it would be like wanting to watch 10 random 20 sec videos, with 40 sec of commercial before every video.

I love Reddit, but they don't understand how to sell. Not to mention they have some kind of Silicon Valley Syndrome (making this up don't Google it..) where they will hire way more people than they need and get backed by massive companies thinking it's the next best thing.

(Speculation): Recently, they hired a marketing director and a full packing team to launch a campaign to sell socks: http://blog.reddit.com/2013/10/test-socks-please-ignore.html

It's just silly. I'm not an expert at business by a long shot but I know that if my costs are higher than my revenues then there is something fundamentally wrong; perhaps it's time to fire the director of importing coffee..

Those cute animals you get when using adblock "thanks for not using adblock here is a cute (insert animal here)" is draining them - go sell something.

ABC = Always Be Closing well I got a new one for you - ABS = Always Be Selling

You guys have it all figured out don't you ?

So they created one of the most popular websites on the net, have hundreds of marketing experts at their disposal and you have it all figured out with a "Always Be Selling" matra...

Its not like they are haemmoraging money into some venture capital black hole.

They are breaking evenish and will soon turn a small profit while building one of the biggest websites in the world. They are owned by Conde nast so they have financial strength.

Doesnt always work to jump on a customer the second they walk through the door, they are playing a long game and I think they are doing it well.

I always use reddit specially when im about to sleep. I am spending 2-4 hours with it everyday and i don't mind getting some ads from time to time honestly just not those in your face ads. Reddit have more mature audience and not like the kid website 9gag.

Companies are gaming reddit full time now.

Notice how you see posts such as "I walked by X and saw THIS" and then when you click through there is a big ass brand right under your nose.

Or those pizza boxes with drawings....DOMINOS PIZZA just flashing in your eyes and some stupid drawing on a box and a bullshit story "OMG I am hungover look what the pizza guy did"

And their hipster mentality really ticks me off. I can agree you shouldn't beat gays or jail them as in some countries, but for fucks sake just saying something is gay will make a post front page. OMG look at this gay car with a gay dog driving! BAM! Front page... OR, the infallible front page "OMG my gay cat just ate a pot of ben and jerry's super gay cream"

    How can you monetize that???

    EDIT:
For SOME of the vote manipulation going on I recommend you see www.reddit.com/r/hailcorporate - they only detect a fraction. As someone who's been on this for years I can tell you I see a helluva lot more disguised marketing than hailcorporate does....

Look at the /r/seo subreddit. Moz staffers keep dropping links there in comments, have a look. "OMG I just HAPPENED to see this post by RAND FISHKIN and I couldn't help my ass but post it here for the 100th time I hope you like it"...

Wow , I really like the part when you explained the stuff about sticking the brand name right infront of your nose. Actually you are totally right, but I got so much used to it that I can't notice it anymore. I've fallen into their subliminal marketing methods.

Yeah, Reddit is gold for sneaky marketing. As long as you can write articles that are informative, interesting and appeal to a general interest in the subreddit...loads of traffic.

As for how to monetize, I think unobtrusive ads are reasonable. I mean, who am I to expect sites to act like charities? As long as they don't become as obnoxious as PirateBay with ads, I don't see the problem. I mean, BHW advertises and it doesn't affect my use/enjoyment of the site--heck, sometimes I actually want to see those ads because they are selling something I want/need.
