Announced Yesterday. Reddit users will have one more way to engage with each other: video in comments.

As per reddit it will be userful for things like these:-
  • Sharing a quick cooking video of a recipe hack.
  • Showing off a newly perfected makeup technique.
  • Demonstrating your fancy soccer footwork in response to a sports thread.
  • Watching video responses from your favorite celebrities during an AMA.

How it works for users:
  • In eligible communities where the feature is on, users will now see a video icon alongside images and GIFs in the comment box on all platforms. Users can record or upload a video reply in these communities or to their profile.
  • Videos do not autoplay and respect users’ audio settings.
And all Video comments will be checked through Reddit’s safety systems before being displayed. Eligible communities are suitable-for-work (SFW), public communities.

Interesting update. Video replies could increase engagement in some communities, especially for tutorials, AMAs, and hobby-related subreddits where showing something is easier than explaining it.

Yeah I agree. There will be so many creative ways to use the video update, and so many ways to make bank with it!

That could actually be good. Video comments may make people stay longer and engage more on the page, which can also be useful for marketing imo.

This is an interesting update. Now videos could make discussion very engaging especially in communities where showing something is easier than explaining it with text.

It's a pretty interesting feature, but I think comment sections could become much more cluttered and harder to follow as a result.

Interesting update from reddit. If moderation and performance remain stable it may improve overall user engagement. Video comments could make discussions more interactive especially for tutorials and demos.

It'll be interesting to see whether users actually adopt it or if it ends up like Reddit Talk - a feature that sounded great but never really took off...

I think this could be useful when a video explains something better than words. It’s nice to have the option, but I’d probably only use it when it actually adds something.

For mobile users, this could make replying easier in some situations. Recording a short video may be quicker than typing out a long comment, especially when there is a lot to explain.

I’m curious how this will affect the comments over time. If people start using videos a lot, Reddit threads could look quite different from what we’re used to.

According to me, this could be useful for showing real results in the comments. A short video can sometimes explain what happened much better than a few lines of text.

From my point of view, video comments may also make it easier to understand someone’s tone. In text, a short reply can sometimes be misunderstood.

I think video comments will be most useful when you need to show something. For example, a quick product demo can be much easier to understand in a video than in a text comment. For simple questions, normal text is probably still easier.

I lowkey kinda hate how X, reddit, tiktok, IG have been a mishmash of the same features like when they all added a FYP and short form video when tiktok became massive. I miss the idiosyncrasies that each website had. Kinda sad but oh well.
