Ive used Avast for years and its been brilliant but once I updated to their new version its all gone wrong.
Seems there's a mass of similar problems going by their forums so Im looking for a FREE replacement.

Please post your free anti virus recommendations please I trust BHW's opinion rather than what I find in google ;)

The FREE one will always be AVG.
If you are looking out for paid ones, I personally used ESET and Kaspersky, both are good, but I prefer ESET for their lower impact on performance.

Working online for almost 15 years, never used antivirus on any of my computers. The 3-4 times I got a really bad virus, I just had to find a way to remove it, but the past few years, I didn't get any.

AVG 2014 is always a solid choice, but I prefer Avast 2014. Both free and good, just overall preference

A lot of support for AVG!

I actually left AVG long time ago to go with Avast as AVG had gone a bit bloaty. Same thing seems to be happening with Avast now.

I hear ya on that and its a false sense of security I know one but it depends what the machines being used for - running a traffic bot for example would be risk without AV i think.

Thanks for the responses Ill take another look at AVG.

    Surprised nobody mentioned ad-aware.

Used it recently to clean my pc up and it runs smooth as butter now :)

Worth mentioning that I tried Avast but it didn't detect any of the virus' Ad-Aware did.

Microsoft Security Essential is the best one. It is free too. My PC got affected with some USB virus bypassing the AVG few years ago. Then tried MSE and my PC never got infected after that.
