I'm not quite sure how vpns work but do they all work like this? where you login; do some stuff then you log out and back and you have a fresh ip? Im only used to using proxies but having issues with them on certain sites detecting them so want to try vpn instead.

So which do you guys recommend?

    My suggestions are,

Express VPN - Some features are Unlimited bandwidth, unlimited server switches, strong encryption and open VPN, SSTP and PPTP protocols.
Open VPN - Some features are SSL VPN solution, remote access, site to site VPNs and fine access controls.
Hotspot Shield - Some features are 256 bit AES Encryption, Private and secure browsing.

I've Been using PIA and proxpn - both are perry good, fast and reliable.
You got how a VPN works right - you can switch IPs with 2 clicks, just don't forget to clean cookies /cache when switching to a new IP

I think Express VPN is the best one .They are available on all the major operating systems.
It is the fast and secure VPN service.

I use linux and have seen openvpn available as a package to install. Does this mean it's a free vpn or do you still have to pay for a vpn provider?

OpenVPN access server downloads with 2 free client connections for testing purpose. You want to pay for it.
If you go for free versions it will not be good effective. In my opinion, You can go for paid versions.

Oh ok so it's the same situation as private vs public proxies then :)

Just wanted to check first since I always like saving money where possible but will shell out if its the most reasonable solution.
