These directories will likely hurt your rankings more than help them. Google is smart enough to figure out reciprocal linking. Try just submitting to a few good directories/niche directories and focusing on other kinds of links.

I can't understand how Google hurt me. One of service provider at freelancers show me his SEO portfolio in which he has done tons of reciprocal directory submission and he Got really good ranking with high PR.

If google hurt by doing link exchange then this will become so easy for me to remove any competitor from my road and build lots of spam links for his website.

If you Reciprocate then your site is dead. Do not reciprocate to those directories just submit on them. Big G will only detect and hurt your site if you reciprocate to those unrelated sites. To them it simply means you have contacted that site that you reciprocated to.

To my understanding the only way you get to rank well in Big G's SERP is you posting a link on a very relevant site to yours and google will detect that as a good link and give points to your site. Now if you want to gain good PR just submit on pages with good Page Rank shall we say minimum of PR2 and it must have less OBL too.

It would be pretty tough to get an outbound link to a directory on a page of your competitor's website.
