I've built quite a lot of sites and this is the first time I've ever had this happen since I started SEO in early 2014.

Basically, a couple of pages are ranking as if they are being penalized for over optimization (aka they consistently rank in the serps in >200# position for main kw). Given that the site is new, never before used, and has no links to it yet...the only way it can be over optimized is from keyword density.

I've tried everything. Under optimizing it, over optimizing it, etc, and it doesnt ever break into the top 100. It only bounces between the 200-300 positions.

The kw's arent very competitive. Content is good and around 3k words. I also know from other sites and pages on this site that I should be around the 60-80th position here.

Anyone else noticed something like this recently? I'm guessing this has something to do with whatever update occurred in the past 6 months, as this wasn't the case last year.

Personally, am currently having this problem. I built a niche website around a keyword of 18 Keyword Competition and wrote great quality articles with comfortable internal link building, but for the main keyword, it's not even in top 200, while long dead blogspots are ranking in top 50 pages.

Website is new and no link building too.

Seems like Google are classifying websites and trying to deem websites quality before pushing it up in SERP

Old sites don't seem to get penalized for tighter optimization rules as they come; whereas new sites do. This is why you'll see pages ranking highly with a 10% kw density with weak off page, yet when you do the same you tank miserably with a new site.

Yours sounds like it could potentially be other things, but how many words is the kw? I have reason to believe what I am describing is happening only to kw's that are 3 words or more in length.

It's a three word keyword with several long tail keywords. I guess the best way to rank is using expired domains right?

Your site is new and that's your answer. Recently, I am also seeing the same pattern with my new sites. Once they get a little bit old (1-2 months), they start seeing positive movements and less fluctuations.

As others said, your site is new and it is going to struggle for a few months to get off the ground. Just keep adding quality content and it'll move up once it's aged a bit. Also, before you do anything else I would recommend checking to see if its been used as a PBN in the past, it could potentially have a bunch of shitty links pointing to it.
