hi all, my site almost has 50 articles posted now.. up until now i have just been using a blog roll as a homepage.. My seo for my main keyword (emd) is on page 9, the search term has 342,000,000 results so i think thats not bad but need to try get it on the top 5 pages . So my plan is to write an 800 word or so welcome page/article on my homepage with my keyword added naturally and with LOTS of internal links linking to individual posts, categories and tags..
is this all that needs to be done to boost the serps a bit?

Blogroll is a complete waste of time. Organise your site into categories and drop down menus per topic for a start.

I think you would be better off with a 1400 - 2000 word article with a handful of links to inner pages and category pages. I would not have a lot of them at all; less than 8 total.

I would also be sure to fill out the content areas on your category pages on your dashboard so that there is some value there as opposed to just a category name and a bunch of posts under it. That is something I do for all my sites.

But to get back to your original idea... too many links is going to look pretty spammy to the naked eye and if it is spammy to the naked eye it is spammy to Google's eye as well.

thanks for your reply, i have not heard of adding content to a category page though? on my categories there i have a featured image, title, and exerpt from the article..

Are you saying to add content as an intro to the category and have the article list underneath it? (sorry if that sounds stupid but i was unaware that you could add content to categories other than the posts in that category)

OK for the homepage i guess I will have links to my 6 categories and a few of my posts that i want the most attention going too..

What are you basing all this from? Your personal experience with a few websites?

Why OP's goal to get to page 5 is unclear. Go for page 1, and to do that you are going to need backlinks from quality sites. There are definitely free trial services out there, so give them a shot (be sure to have your keyword research ready!)

    This!

Never use blogroll, it's a waste of time and link juice.

I currently own a little over 40 websites in the business and finance niches that are all pretty big content wise and don't do too bad in the search engines and don't do too badly in the revenue department.

If I was not sure what I was saying was accurate, I would not have said anything.

Check how top ranking sites are laid out and try emulating them.

After Panda 4.0 content is more important than ever, so I agree with the poster above about 1,400-2,000 word articles. And make them topic related instead of keyword related, which is easier in a long article than a 500 word post. In short you get to rank more keywords with less pages, great cause it requires less link building.

Nope that will never do it. You have to do 1 of two things

1 Build links (getting harder to do without getting slapped)

    2. Promote the posts therby getting natural links and shares, this is possible (despite what people will tell you here) but takes time and some money and the content has to be really good. I would promote it on Facebook and going to forums in your niche to try and build a name for yourself.

Basstrackerboats what you said about having unique content on each category page, do you have an actual Wordress page with content and then a shortcode to show the posts in a category or something, or do you use the official WP categories page and add content some how to them?

Thanks a lot man you are pretty awesome. Feel stupid for never bothering to edit options for categories though.. This is perfect as for each category I have published a full article called "an introduction to x category" , I will just remove those posts and use them for the category description instead..

remember to redirect the old pages to the new url if you have quite a few links pointing to them. Would be silly to let all that juice go to waste ;)
Also, custom excerpts for all your posts can make your category pages 100% unique in most cases. Just make sure you don't have date based/author pages showing same info.

But back on topic, I agree with BTB about the longer articles but instead of 1400-2000, I try to hit 2000 words plus on my home pages + category pages. Great for including long tail variants into the article without worrying about stuffing penalties.
