I have been playing around with instagram for a two weeks. I have tried doing comments and likes. I am now play around with other ways to get specific groups of people to follow me. I was wondering if anyone has any reading on psychology of why people use instagram? It would be helpful in creating an awesome bot. Thanks!

I'm building one with python right now. But I think liking photos or comments based on keywords is ineffective. So I am building a custom script.

I would be interested to see your results (if you ever get a chance) regarding comment:like ratio and how many avg likes does it take to get a follower. I am doing a lot of other things atm so I don't have too much time to get into this, I use a simple iMacro.

I can help you though by telling you my experience.

I started with just the most generic tags. I targeted "smile" and this gave me about 3-5 follows a day (24 hours). However, I don't know if the fact that it was a personal account with a "real" picture changes anything, I'm assuming it does. I haven't tried business promotion with a %100 business account. I use a personal account so I am a "real person" but sprinkle promotion here and there. People usually want to follow real people instead of a business or a company (unless said business gives them a really good incentive).

To get into the psychology of IG.
It is actually pretty simple, instagram and most social media is all about the person. They want it to be about them, they want people to like them and their posts. Even though it might not seem that way on the surface, it will always come down to that. You can use that to your advantage. Try to target things that are user created. For instance I am promoting a media/graphics business. I will target the tag "drawings". This has proven almost %175 better than the tag smile. I will assume this is because: One, it is something someone made and usually it won't get as many likes as a picture of an attractive person, a sports car etc. Your like becomes more valuable. Two, it would be very hard to post a drawing that isn't original. If someone has posted a drawing it is almost always theirs. This reduces the amount of likes wasted on pictures from users that have +100 likes, and will pay no attention to your like.

In my experience I found the most effective strategy is this.

    Make your likes valuable.
While you can reach people by targeting tags like "selfie" and "smile", that is what most others are doing too. When someone post a picture, they get +30 likes they could care less who likes it at that point. For a user that posts a picture and gets 5+ likes they will be more likely to check out who liked their picture.

    Make your likes count.
Its like investing, you only have 300 likes to "spend" don't go after pictures that have 100+ likes on them. You have to find a niche.

    Original Content
This is a small one and may not apply but try to target OC. Things people have made or spent time on. Things like drawings or sculptures. This may let you rake in a few more likes here and there.

    Comments
This may not apply if you want to use %100 bot but I find that just taking 10 min or so to write genuine comments and reply to them helps a lot. I could say I maybe get 1 or 2 a day on days I do this.

Hope this helps! It would be awesome to see what you can do with this. After awhile I thought mass liking any picture that gets posted was probably not the best way to do it. There had to be a sweet spot, where psychology or statistics would come to play.

Also disclaimer, I'm not an expert! Just giving my experience.

Oh one thing I can't believe I forgot! Try to target posts 1 or 2 days old! I dare say I got about %50 more likes/follows doing that. (maybe this is common knowledge) haha

I am having success with liking targeted followers photos. I am going to try to start logging the results to tweak them. I am getting about 100 follows a day now. I hope to get to 400 after getting some statistics.
