OK, computers are getting really fast these days. If you have one that has more than 4GB of RAM , you must make sure that you have a 64 Bit Windows installed.

This is because a 32 Bit Windows operating system will only support 4GB of RAM. The rest will be useless. Also, even some basic versions of 64 Bit Windows like Windows 7 64 Bit will also only support 4GB of RAM. So, choose a operating system that will be able to take full advantage of your hardware.

You can check if all your RAM is being used by right clicking on "My computer" icon and then by going to properties. If any RAM is being unused, it will say so in your computer description summary.

I hope this will be useful for one or two people who might be having more than 4GB of RAM on their computer but actually using less than what they have...

    Cheers.

64bit uses up all the RAM available unlike Vista or other 32 bit systems..

But sometimes it says it doesnt so you need to hit start and enter: msconfig

Then go to the "boot" tab , advanced options and check maximum memory.

    Then just restart :)

^ Yeah, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit uses all the ram.
I think he's saying that some of the basic versions of Windows 7 64 bit don't use more than 4GB of ram.

Windows® 64 bits is good even if you have under 4GB RAM.
I had Vista Ultimate 32 bits with 3GB RAM and I switched to Vista Ultimate 64 bits (always with 3GB RAM) and I got a real performance boost.

Users like you were the reason why I made this post. I too bought a computer with 16GB Ram with Windows 32 Bit operating system. I had to take it back to get 64 Bit windows after I saw the restricted RAM usage.

Someone has said here that this is common knowledge but I guess it is not so common after all. I bet there are a a few more people here who do not know about this.
