I have a website that ranked for old keywords. The website is old, most of the links have died, so going to try and re-rank the website for different keywords but have higher Ms.

Any one successfully changed the keywords and then ranked it?

Are we talking about the homepage or the entire domain? If you create new internal pages, you will have a chance to rank for some stuff. Some will depend also on how different the new topics are from the original intent of the site.

Is it for the same topic?

More than likely it will take time, but i assume if it is in the same topic you will have some trust flow for it.

You can do it but redesign and content needed for new keywords...

I would update the content on the old keyword posts make them even more targeted towards that keyword. Ranking is hard and having even trickles of traffic from the search engines will help promote the fresher content you will be creating.

Good advice from above thanks.

The website was ranking high a year ago, and I think through over optimise I lost it.

I'm going to try re-rank for similar keywords in the same subject. Reasoning is different keywords should beat the over optimise.
