How to find whether the expired tumblr can be re-registered? Is there any option using Scrapebox?
I can find the dead links through it but don't know how to find the ones that is enabled to be re-registered.

You can try scrapebox to check availability, but it's not accurate.
The thing with the tumblr message (error code 404) is that it doesn't make a difference between Banned usernames (this are not available for registration) and Deleted usernames (this are available for registration). So tumblr won't show on that page if the username is up for grabs.
So your best bet is to code a bot or to test manually your usernames.

There is this vanity checker or something like that on scrapebox that does this.

Some Tumblr blogs just aren't available for re-registration so even if you see a 404 message, it doesn't mean that you can go and grab it. Unfortunately you just have to manually check a LOT of usernames before you find ones that are available and have good metrics. And remember that the majority of Tumblr blogs get their backlinks internally from other Tumblr blogs (reblogs, etc) so while they do have some good, they are not going to give you the same juice as an expired domain, say.

But they can be good to get other links indexed or just to build extra authority to your other Tier 1s.

What the fuck are you talking about?
Have you tested yourself or you're talking ## ### ##?

Here is a case study using tumblrs with PR as tier 1: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...22216-100-pr2-tumblr-accounts-case-study.html

404 - The same as the ones that aren't available to be re-registers.

    That's already been discussed.

I have re-registered many Tumblr blogs with PR2 - PR4 and have not experienced anywhere near as good results as with expired domains. So please don't just assume that I'm talking out of my arse. And have you actually checked the backlink profiles of these expired Tumblr blogs? You'll see that the vast majority of their links come from other Tumblr blogs. Is this ever likely to be as powerful as an expired domain with backlinks from a variety of sources?

First, scrape a list of tumblr blogs.

Next, keep the ones that give a 404 error. Filter them by whatever metric you like.

Grab the front part of the blog (xxx.tumblr.com) and try creating a new account with xxx as the username.

If it doesn't give you an error "this username is already in use", then the blog is available for registration.

You can then either create a new tumblr account, or add it to your current account as a new blog.

    Easy stuff.

I agree they not have much power and old links from reblog/comment/like get deleted when tumblr account is deleted.

Selling tumblr links/blogs is his bread and butter and he can't just accept this thing.

Tumblr got demoted last year and lost its SEO mojo. Google doesn't want a Yahoo product dominating SERPs....

IMO you should look at alternative web 2.0's.

They are not as powerful as some expired domains (although some have varied sources of backlinks). But saying this tumblrs are good only as tier 2 or for indexing links...
This makes me think you haven't tested this as tier 1.

First 404 check, vanity checker addon then I get my list and use a fast Imacros Script. I don't think Tumblr works very well. The key if to find web 2.0 reclaim sites that no one else is even touching.

I just do not see Tumblr really helping allot with rankings.
