'...Just to let everyone know...I haven't been around this forum for a while due to a 500GB external hard drive crash in which I lost a lot of work. The external hard drive is less than 6 weeks old and everything on it can now NOT be accessed.

Busy trying to salvage what I can and re-do what I can't salvage. This will take considerable time.

Anyone waiting for designs or anything else from me, I will get back to you in due course and can only offer an apology.

Just so you guys know I haven't abandoned you all.

Geez, I miss this place!'

Hey Magician,

I'd be worried if the hard drive in your head were crushed. But since it's still running it's juts a matter of time and everything will be restored.

good to have you back at BHW themagician. sorry to hear about the hard disk crash. I hope everything is fine now. take care mate.

My 250GB HD Crashed 2 Times.. 1 Partition Removed/Corrupted.. Later all gone.. But if you are smart you can get everything back.

1) Install XP in new drive
2) Don't do any changes in Corrupted HD,Don't copy new files, don't install anything
3) Install GetDataBackup NTFS & start recovering (I have 100% Recovery Rate)
4) Done :D

I have a MyBook 320Gb. One day Windows froze and after reboot all files were gone from MyBook so I took it apart and installed the HDD directly to the motherboard slot and used a recovery program to recover all of my files. I can't remember what was the software called but I have them all in a folder so if you need help, I can upload them to RS or Mediafire.

Get 16gb zip drives or SDISK.. Keep backup images to a raid HD or upload to a private FTP.

Been more and more bad things about EX hd's. Ever since my last one crashed(seagate 150gb) I have been using the above methods. Mine had to do with a power surge.

Dont know if this will help but it did for me. On my old laptop, running XP, one day while watching a video it just crashed went black and would turn on but not boot. It would not even boot or let me use the XP CD.

However I put Ubuntu in the CD Drive. You can run the OS off the CD - yes and it worked. I was then able to get my work off via USB. I then wiped whole hardrive and installed Ubuntu. I still use the laptop to this day and my downloading machine/storage.

Yikes... reading bad things about mybooks makes me nervous.

But I'm a cd-whore as well. I would honestly say you fellas should ALL be doing the same as me. Cd's are relatively cheap, and if kept stored somewhere safe provide a permanent backup you can reference/access years from now.

When your working on a big project, like say a website;Do what I do. Every 2-3 days, burn a copy of all related files.

I back up everything constantly on 2 mybooks, but life is crazy-and I hate losing time. Id rather shell out an extra $200 for cds.

On the upside of burning cds, be wasteful. I just throw them away when I have more than 5 backups of any one thing. They make great frisbees ;)

'...Thanks for all the advice guys.

The external HD is a Buffalo:
Code:

As it is connected to a Mac, I have been using TechTool Pro 4 to salvage files but the procedure is taking forever as it's such a big drive. TechTool Pro 5 is out any day soon:
Code:
http://www.micromat.com/

As I have an Intel Mac, maybe if a ran a Windows programme like Radz suggests this will work. At the moment I am still experimenting. The annoying thing is I only purchased it a few weeks ago and transferred the files off the internal hard drive.

Next time I shall back up twice, which is automatic through Mac's 'Time Machine' utility. It might seem expensive and a bit crazy to have two external hard drives backing everything up but hopefully it will lower the chances of a future problem. Surely I won't be unlucky enough to have two external drives pack up on me at the same time. That's the theory anyway.
