    Hey guys

I have a client who has been jumping from position 40 or so up to over 120 for the last 3 months then back down again but only briefly before going back up, i'm aware of the google dance but this seems different in nature. The link profile was pretty spammy when I got it but has since been improved and disavowed etc to the best of my ability.

Is it common for a site with a previous penatly to be unable to find any sustained traction in the serps in a pattern similar to this?

    thanks as always everyone!

Have you got any message in webmaster tools. If there is no messages, change the design of the site and add some more new contents and then create some quality backlinks. That will give you a idea.

It's possible that it could be an algorithmic penalty. Google does not alert you about these through the site messages section in Webmaster Tools, so the only way to know is to monitor and analyse your traffic and keyword position.

To correct it, I would do what masterjani said and change different aspects of the website to see if that makes an impact.
