Every single one of my rankings fell a few days ago...some by a few places 4 -6 others by 30 - 40, some by alot more. All on the same site. Site structured so each page foused on a keyword. Ive not done any serious linkbuilding, few here and there, never blasted he site. All original content on it. Buiilt a few .edu links to a specific page a few days back...but that wouldnt effect the whole site (would it)

Site is about 8 months old, not sandboxed, cant work out whats happened. I've not done anything new in terms if link building so can it be a google dance? Or is it a natural ranking position....cant work it out!!!! :(

Any experienced friends want to tell me what going on and what to do?

Just assume that google is schizophrenic and all will be understood.

This kind of shit always drives me nuts. One day you're doing good and the next day out of the blue google takes a weed eater to your site and kills your income.

I've been on a roller coaster the last month. Today I even saw a bizarre thing in searches. The organic search was only 3 listings and you had to click a link to see the rest...WTF?!?! That's really gonna screw people if they implement that.

They are constantly adjusting their algo. So don't worry about it.. I've had sites drop for a month and then come back a month later in the same position, stronger, or weaker..

If that happens, that's going to basically force google to wre write their entire algo cause the amount of new "seo" companies that would pop up and people trying to spam their way to the stop would floop. I don't believe it would be a logical step for them, especially when people will find a way to game it

I don't think gaming it would change. You would just see a lot more people spamming away to try and break the top 3. Google is testing it out for a reason. I only saw it until I clicked the see more results link and then it never came back.

They may be testing to see how many people actually want the full results and then tailoring how many results are shown to them based on their history. This way the odds of them clicking an ad are higher.

People always say not to rely on Google it's just hard when that's what you know best. But I have to seriously get into other ways of getting traffic, google is fucking nuts and there isn't much rhyme or reason. I'm not going to use them as a search anymore they have become too big and psycho with their algo. I just keep getting all these curve balls when I try and play by their rules, you want original content? ok done. High PR backlinks? sure big G no prob...Then what do they do, drop your site like that...I'm just venting but this shit is ridiculous.

So what do i do in the meantime? If it stays as it is, the site is pointless as it selling physical products.

dont know what to do as I am in the same boat... my site was doing well stuck #1-3 on first page for a whole year and BAM! Site had quality original content with some affiliate links and was fine for a year. Had 20 pages/keywords of the website ranking 1st page google and was making decent money.

Then all of a sudden out of nowhere, google crushes my website and all my posts/pages drop completely off to nowheresville but are still indexed. They just dont rank and nothing I do seems to make any of them appear in the top 500 even.

Yet through all this they all rank completely fine in yahoo and bing however I get barely any traffic from those 2 search engines combined...

    what a friggin waste

What were you using to monetize? Just wondering what your outbound links were like..

I had the same thing happen to me, and I was monetizing with Amazon. I made sure that all my affiliate links were nofollowed.

I bought the domain about 2-3 months ago.... it took about a month to get solid rankings and generate traffic at which point I was ranking for 10-20 keywords on the first page, bringing in 15-30 uniques a day. All I really did was blast out an article to high PR directories, build a few Web 2.0s and blasted them with Scrapb0x. Also used that to find relevant blogs to comment on.

I made a few affiliate sales, and put up AdSense to generate a few more bucks here and there - it probably made me about $15 for the month it was ranking. Not much but I also have plans to build this site up to 20-30 pages of unique content (it's at about 8 now).

I checked my rankings this morning and they fell off drastically. I'm now ranked like 300-600 for the terms I was on the first page for.

My plan is to continue adding the content, take Amazon links off of the homepage and only link on the inner pages which are focused on specific products instead of the general category.

I'm in the process of finding a few high PR blog comment links and low outbound EDU comment links. I'm going to create a few more Web 2.0s with unique content instead of spun articles and point the crappy links towards them.

I want to trade reciprocal links with highly relevant partners who have resource/links pages.

I also plan on participating in 2-3 bigger forums on the topic (instead of spamming my site with 100's or 1000's of xrumer profiles). I could be wrong but I have seen a lot of forums popping up for searches, and I think if G sees you are ACTIVE in the main forums instead of having 100 accounts with 0 posts each, this will help as long as you stay relevant.

Either way, I'm going to take this slap across the face as a wake up call instead of a reason to get down and question what I've been doing. The bottom line is some things will work for one niche and not for another, and you need to adapt to keep up with Google.

Once I start generating some quality traffic with Google, I want to build e-mail lists so I don't have to rely on them should they do this again once I have more sites setup down the road.
