I own a site (actually business site) and was doing some PPC to get us up and running. At the same time I targeted a few terms which were reasonable to rank for.

After doing some competitor backlink analysis, the number one site had multiple high PR (from PR3 to PR6) links from Chinese web pages, even pointed to inner pages for relatively low competition and traffic keywords.

Everything about this screamed spam to me, but I'm a noob when it comes to blackhat techniques.... has anyone seen this and if so how do you see them acquiring links like these? Straight up cash or some type of elaborate hack?

Are the Chinese sites similar to the ones found is this page's backlink analysis? Site: do a google.co.uk search for the query [swarovski] and it's the third or so result with a .uk TLD.

Wow, that's interesting. Links are not visible on the sites but they are in the source. Sites look like government and news portals.

Chances are they are paid links. I've seen many high PR Chinese .gov and news sites that sell links. Some are visible and others are hidden in the code. Most likely how they are getting these backlinks.

Yup, it's exactly like these. As I'm going through the PR backlinks I see 900 PR0, about 20 PR1, 10 PR2 then about 300 PR5-8 which were all from chinese domains.

Nothing new. Majority of the backlinks in China are either 1)Paid or 2)Hacked.

Most of the hidden links are hacked links, sell by the hacker and it is very cheap. They sell in bulk. Majority of the sites are high PR China .gov .edu etc. Just look at the webpage source code (usually in Javascript) and report them to search engine. The site will be gone from the top 100 ranking in about a week or less depends on how soon the search engine react to the report. You can outrank or deindex your competitor easily.

Paid links are usually sell by those Chinese news portal (Newspaper, TV station website etc) through a few agents. Each agent has many sub-agents/affiliates. This kind of site is generally useless, as a PR8 website has about hundred and some even 200 - 300 hundreds of unrelated outbound links.

Anyway you can find many of these agents selling cheap high PR links in DP.
