Rankings fluctuating - what should I do?

Hey, I have a domain I'm doing some SEO on, I am not doing anything crazy, social bookmarking, directory backlinking and recently a mini-net. For the last couple of weeks my rankings are fluctuating, literally every few minutes. At one point I checked my rankings for one keyword three times in the space of about 10 minutes and I had three different ranking positions, from being #2 to #6 and #10. (I'm only checking this many times because of the fluctuating results)

I'm concerned that Google is still making up it's mind if it likes my website or not, but two weeks like this is making me think Google could kick me off the rankings all-together.

Does anyone have any advice? Should I do some article backlinking? Should I do a good solid batch of backlinks or just a little bit?

    Thanks in advance.

My advice is to stop obsessing on where you're at every 10 minutes and just focus on making backlinks. If it's a competitive niche you should be actively creating backlinks to your site.

Isn't it unusual for rankings to fluctuate so much?

It is a little unusual but if you are working with a new site you may see this happen... I would continue to slowly backlink the site suing a variety of keywords and a variety of backlink types.

Articles ain't gonna' hurt you none either.

Every day content is changing, links are getting deleted, new pages on other sites are getting social bookmarked, indexed, backlinked etc. It all depends on your websites topic and content, and your competitors topics and content.

If the keyword was "Best Lawyer Schools" and the top 5 spots changed every day, I would be concerned, but I am assuming that is not the case here. None of the top sites have PROVEN to be an authority site yet, so just keep hoping that eventually your site is decided to be the authority.

Thanks for the replies. My domain is around 4yrs old and I've been doing bouts of SEO. I think the recent mini-net is causing indecision with Google. Could this possibly be due to the keyword back-linking in the mini-net being more effective that the other SEO I've been doing and making it look like I'm only targeting 3-4 keywords and not being broad enough? Would you guys think that doing one of the SEO backlinking services here on BHW would be too full-on if my website is fluctuating this much? I will target 3 unique keywords, not the same ones as the mini-net to try to obtain some balance?

Site is 4 yours old, slam that puppy with backlinks if the content is good... I would also never build a site and target just 3 keywords unless it's a MFA type mini site.

On my larger sites, I target 3 - 4 KW per page generally and I am sure that you are missing out on crossover traffic by not targeting some of the ancillary keywords.

Ok great thanks! I'm definitely not targeting only 3-4 keywords, I was just thinking possibly the search engines have been seeing it that way because in addition to the mini-net, most of my backlinks appear to be focusing on those keywords. Hopefully with some more backlinks and a broader keyword range my results will stop fluctuating so much. Thanks for all the replies.
