As a few others are reporting, I have also had some rankings drop for my websites. It started last week, one website lost rankings, a day later I got a manual penalty notice for thin content (it has content, maybe not enough).
Then Thursday, 3 other websites all got penalised, as well as my new site I setup to replace the penalised one. I did a 301 redirect, which started to work but then tanked. Which is a risk with 301s, but we know the score.
Strangest thing is this: I used 301 redirects for 2 of my penalised websites. The 301 domains were not on Search Console (they were in the past), but I got a manual penalty notice for them as well, even though they're not currently there! That tells me Google knows my strategy and that they must have targeted me via my Search Console account. So obviously I start again with fresh sites, but won't be using Search Console at all.
Has anything similar happened to anyone else? I've lost sites in the past, but that's why I have 3 running, so if I lose one, I've still got others running. Never had all my sites taken out.
I'm changing hosting as well to be safe.
    Any tips, suggestions welcome

301 was always an easy to spot strategy for Google. I mean you can see it manually if you watch the URL bar at the top of the browser.
That it worked for a couple of years is the surprising thing for me. I guess they were refining the penalty approach to make sure they got as few false positives as possible (from sites using it for none "SERP gaming" reasons)

Good news? The "thin content" penalty is far the easier to fix.
Pop along to Iwriter, Odesk Elancer or wherever or get a good speech to text program open and buy/create and post content.
The penalty is URL by URL so only fix good URL's that are your landing pages. Delete the rest. Essp make sure you aren't duplicating content in a CMS like Wordpress by having it indexed under its own title as well as under category, tag or author as well. Ok to have category content - just set them as not indexed in your sitemap.

This is likely a result of the VERY slow Penguin 4.2 rollout...

The fix is get more good content up. That depends on the size and scope of your site. For most sites its probably a half a days work to get 10,000 words written up if done manually (speech to text probably) or $100 if you buy it from Iwriter or wherever.

    Hope that helps

I use google tools all the time, just don't put more than one website on the account.

Because if one goes down they will take the others down.

Other than through the Google console, how were the websites linked together and what link strategy were you using?

That's the only way they were linked. Hosting was different, registrar info was different. Link strategy is irrelevant, the penalty was for thin content

Not so. 'Thin content' is often used as a guise for a whole host of PBN and linking activity. What I'm really asking is, were you using common PBN sites and if so to when extent did you link to each site from each PBN?

If you get a manual action, just get a new domain and move everything over.

Yeh, I'll do that, but the next step is to get it ranking again pretty quickly. What is currently working with churn and burn projects?

    Home Page:
I also use webmaster tools - its good because you know a bit more about what Google is thinking about your site.

This makes sense though, if you have sites in the same account, one gets hit then they are likely going to notice/check the other sites as well.

You need Webmaster Tools, if only to find out if you have a manual penalty or not. I guess I'll need to setup a few gmail accounts so I only have one website per account. Thanks for the heads up guys. Is Analytics okay or same advice? Only one per account?

Nothing is behind the wall, I only use chrome.

I log into SAPE using chrome.

The best part is I get sape.ru email's to my gmail account and I read them using chrome.

    Nothing to fear at all.
