Ranking with "crap" links and staying at the top of SERPS - is it possible?

I wonder if I would build "crap" links like blog comments, guestbooks, profile links to my site slowly then will my site still get a penalty or would it not just rank? I know these links are used for churn and burn but can I rank with them for long term also? I mean mainly non contextual links.

It depends entirely on the niche, your keyword, and your competition.

I could rank for "how to tie a shoe with a goldfish in between your teeth" with crappy links, and I could definitely stay top 3 too.

So... a bit more context around your question will be helpful if you're to get useful answers :)
 
One of my competitor use crappy link but I 100% sure he hide his real link with some PBN
Anyway you lose nothing try it on dummy site and see result ..
