Ranking the homepage vs homepage/focus-keyword

    Sorry for the noob question but for example you have a client that owns a vape shop in NY and the money keyword is "NY Vape Shop", you write an SEO optimized article for the keyword. Do you place that article on your home page or you make a specific page on your domain (i.e domain/ny-vape-shop)?

    Another thing, if you do decide to create a specific page for that keyword, would you rather have the homepage show up for that keyword or the specific page? If it's the homepage, how do you assure that it outranks that specific page? I know to some people it doesn't matter just as long you show up in the rankings but it'd be more ideal for the homepage to show up for the major keyword.

    Do you place the article on the specific page and hyperlink the major keyword on that page to the home page? Am I in the right direction here or? Thanks in advance for any help guys.
