I just registered a very cool .rocks domain
Just wondering now if I will have major disadvantages in ranking such a domain.

    any experiences?

    Thanks!

Ranking .rocks is exactly the same as ranking a .com. There is no difference at all. So no, there won't be any disadvantages.
There are a bunch of people saying .com/.net/.org rank better but that's just false impression because there are for more .com websites than .rocks websites existing.

I understand that the onpage / offpage process is the same. But it is common knowledge that google prefers "normal" TLD like .com, .net etc
    Right?

It's not really Google that will hurt you for having a .rocks name. What hurts you the most is your users not remembering that your website is not .com. You'll lose some of your returning visitors because they will go to site.com instead of site.rocks.

I guess I haven't really seen too many of the new TLDs in the SERPS, but I only assume it's because the number of people that actually buy these sites and make a good website on them is probably pretty low.
