I'm assuming this theory isn't new, but I've been thinking about it and want to know if others have tried some variation of it.

So much of the emphasis in new algorithms seems to be based on authority and trust, so could you build a page on a reputable website and then do off-site seo for that page instead of trying to rank your own site?

I know some people do this to rank their own site indirectly with multi tier linking and all of that, but what about using that page to sell directly? Make a facebook page or forum thread or whatever and recommend a website which is just a domain you have forwarded to an offer. Thoughts?

People have been doing that for years. Check out the serps and you'll see tons of affiliate sites built on webs.com, etc. Their authority makes it a little bit easier to rank and escape certain google filters.
