Ranking keywords?

So, here's my question... What is it about an article that would cause certain keywords to rank for your website? Do I want to keep posting different articles targeting the same keyword every time? Then after you have (x) number of good quality articles targeting that keyword, your website ranks?

I am currently having 60 day SEO done, and my SEO has three keywords that I gave him... so my other question is, do I need to be making articles based on the three keywords I gave him? Or is he going to be ranking those keywords on his own and I should just be trying to rank other keywords?

Once you attain rankings it is insanely hard to lose them, even through attacks by competitors because of advanced recognition technologies from search engines.
