My website has the same keywords for the inner pages and my homepage. I have about 400 links to my homepage and only a few social signals to my inner pages. I heard that it's easier to rank the inner pages -> they rank faster. My home page is at #5 position for the main kw. Should I start building links to my inner pages now?

Don't try to rank according to whatever you "think" its easier.

Rank according to your website and your visitors. Are you going to obtain better conversions if you rank an inner page or if you direct them towards the homepage? Are they going to engage in the same manner?

Those factors are not only important for the "rankings" but also for your business model, so take your time and consider all of the possible variants to see which works best for you.

The conversion is going to be the same. People go to homepage -> go to page. There is only 1 inner page. So they have nowhere else to go. Thats why its a bit harder.

Conversion rates are never the same... unless you have the exact same content duplicated in both.

If you only have 2 urls in the domain you might want to add quite a few more if you are intending to rank that site (unless you are going full on BH).

Assuming you are going full bh, then it won't really matter what you try to rank. I would just send links to both and see which one ranks faster.

If you are looking at a wh approach, you will need a shit ton of content and a "deeper" website.

It's impossible to create a deeper website for this specific niche. I have a homepage with some keywords. It links to a page which is split by pagination into 30 pages. Each page has the same keywords as the homepage. The content is bassically past papers if you get what I mean. So when student revise for maths it goes. Maths->Paper 1,Paper2,Paper 3. Etc. And the website it called mathspapapers.com.

Stop trying to rank your homepage and inner pages for the same keywords. That will lead to keyword cannibalisation and confuse the algorithm as to which page of your site to rank for which keyword.

Hayden of No Hat SEO has mentioned in one of his posts that internal pages rank better than homepages and I've sites ranking that substantiate this claim.

It used to be that home pages ranked better, although recently many people reported - and i can confirm as well, even though it's not a 100% rule - that internal pages seems to gain a little bit of advantage, at least in early stage of a website - my theory is that google realizes that the homepage is being gamed with the influx of links, and sandboxes it, while the usual lower volume of links to internal pages do not trigger the sandbox.

Long term though, home pages tend to rank better and be more stable. Whatever you do, don't try to cannibalize your keywords by ranking 2 pages for the same keyword. And 400 links to homepage and 0 to internal pages is an unnatural flag regardless of your strategy, you should have a better ration whether you want to rank with the homepage or not.
