Ranking for hundreds of low-search keywords

Has anyone tried creating a site with the intention of targetting hundreds of keywords, rather than aggressively targetting a few?

The niche which I am targetting has a handful of search terms which generate a lot of searches, but these are extremely competitive. However, there are hundreds of search terms which have about 300-1500 searches per month each, and have very little competition - for most, random forum posts which mention the term rank in the top 5.

I run a news site related to the niche, and if I keep the site going, I will inevitably be posting articles related to each search term.

At the moment there are 3 main competitors in my niche - one PR6, one PR4 and one PR0. The high PR sites are very selective about what news stories they run, so they are not competing for too many terms, whereas the PR0 is posting everything, and competing for all terms, but I should be able to outrank him easily, as my site is a PR2. The high PR sites are also older (4-5 years), whereas the PR0 is about 6 months old.

Basically, the story is that my site used to be a forum, but the forum died, and since I had a PR2 domain with traffic, I decided to create a blog.

However, the domain is up for renewal in a couple of months, and the blog is taking up a lot of my time, in comparison to other sites, so I'm hoping to see whether its worthwhile or whether I should just let the domain die. I have never built links or promoted the site in any way.

I'm just wondering whether anyone has tried anything similar? Was it a success?

Go for it, my personal blog that I don't even monetize or SEO gets plenty of longtail organic traffic, just build that good content and I'm sure you'll find people visit from loads more keywords too.

Ralphy, don't assume you'll outrank other sites just because yours has a higher PR. I regularly outrank even PR6 & PR7 sites with brand new sites with no PR at all. How do I do it? It's a melting pot of a keyword-rich domain name, unique keyword-rich content, good on-site SEO then a mix of some quality backlinks and LOADS of lower quality backlinks. Then further layers of web 2.0 sites each with thousands of backlinks.

Is it worth doing that in your niche? I don't know what sort of money there is to be made as I don't know the niche. Why not set it up as an autoblog to take some of the work out of it for you?

That is my goal. Rank for tons of long-tails by accident on other pages while targeting a big boy word for the home page. As I keep building links to both the home page and the deep pages, it'll all be shared by the awesome interlinking that is set up. It's a win/win.

    Thanks for all replies.

I wasn't assuming that the results would go in order of PR, I was just using them as a general tool for comparison. The PR4 and PR0 sites are both blogspot blogs without a domain, and I get the impression that I can outrank both of them pretty easily, but the PR6 has a lot of genuine, good quality backlinks, so he'll be difficult to beat.

I was just looking to get an idea of whether anyone has had any success, as I have to make a decision whether to spend the money renewing the domain, and spend the time building up the site and building backlinks, when that time could be better spent on more profitable ventures.

But nothing ventured, nothing gained, so I guess this will be a bit of an experiment.

That's not a problem, for 90% of the terms there is little to no competition, so I'm ranking for them without even getting any backlinks. My blog is regularly indexed by Google, so that's not a problem either.

An update on this: since I started this experiment, my traffic has gone from approx 50 uniques/day up to about 150, and there are a lot more terms I still need to post about to rank for those too.

There are also a couple of medium-search-volume keywords which I'm naturally ranking quite highly for, but I will need to get some backlinks to get to #1 for those. But most terms I'm top 3, if not #1 where there's little competition.

According to Yahoo Site Explorer I have 27 backlinks at the moment.

You see how people succeed with micro niche sites, target low competition 3k/month phrases * 400+ sites, so do the same with your blog... all around one topic or various... you only need 20 well ranking 3k/month phrases on a well paid niche
