    my competitors rank for
    buy widget
    buy widget city
    city buy widget
    buy widgetS city

they rank for different variety of a keyword that's basically saying the same thing. But my site only ranks for one keyword
for example: ranks for "city buy widget" but not for "city buy widgetS" and not for "buy widget city"

what can I do to rank for the different varieties of the keyword instead of just one?

Write a longer article/home page intro (depends on if your trying to rank a post or your home page) and include more long tail phrase variations without keyword stuffing. The words do not necessarily have to be right next to each other - Google is pretty smart (in some ways). Just make sure that the words are not separated by "stop words."

For example: "I was able to buy a good supply of widgets while in Denver."

Google this (BHW link - I can't post links) and read the entire thing: phpbuilt authority site

Include those keywords in your article and you will rank for them. If you still don't, build some backlinks to your site using those keywords but keep it minimal. Build just a few.
