I have been doing some KW research and I have found what I think is a profitable idea if I can rank in turkish gooooogle for a turkish kw. It's not my usual kind of project but I am sure I can make good cash with this.

Outsourcing the writing is not an issue, and I can buy a turkish domain .tr or whatever no worries. The thing that has me stumped is, how to build the backlinks?

Do I need to build them on turkish sites? Do I need to research turkish web2.0 webistes and article directories? OR can I just submit loads of either English articles with turkish anchor text ot turkish articles to English sites...? Pretty sure both those ideas wont work so what to do??

Has anyone done similar to this? Doesnt have to be Turkey.

    I'd really appreciate some input.

Turkish domain + set Turkey as the target in webmaster tools + local directories and some Turkish links + use your anchors in English articles and websites like you stated = rank!

I think it's the same work as usual site but do it in Turkish. Write articles in Turkish for example and post it on web 2.0 like wordpress, blogger and others... with your links.

International links work surprisingly well, you just have to find a solution for spinning.

For targeting a country like Turkey do I must have .tr domain and hosting in Turkey (Turkish IP) for better rankings? Or how much does it help?

    DannisStone is spot on.....

Set your settings in Webmaster Tools (one of the RARE times I recommend using Google for ANYTHING), get yourself a TR tld domain, get yourself some quality backlinks from TR domains.

Then mix in the usual backlinks that you would do for Google normally, and you are all good.

If you want to avoid Google Webmaster Tools, then use a Turkish host for your site.

If you create quality content for your site, then, you could also contact Turkish blog owners and ask to do guest posts.

If it's a business in a Turkish location, for example, ankara restaurant, then you may also consider doing a Google Places listing.

I had some experience with this so I've got a couple of words

First, the majority of Turkish webmasters use only blackhat / shady ways for ranking and somehow google's algorithms are a couple of versions older or something that they manage to rank 10 sites on the first page with almost the same content and shitty backlinks (backlinks from a page containing only links with anchor texts - no content etc)

I happen to see sites with only 50-100 words of content on a page and still appear on the 1st page. What is more ridiculous is, many of these guys use Adsense to monetize which is 100% against Adsense TOS. No content, no original content. shady tactics etc.

Similarly, Panda doesnt seem to have the same effect on Turkish sites. (again, older algorithm?) Google doesn't care about unique and useful content in Turkish sites as it cares in English.

About your question, yes, you can rank for a Turkish keyword by using Turkish anchor texts in English content. However, after the last changes (global) effects of this approach seems to have lessened.

One last thing. TLDs in Turkey have the format .com.tr or net.tr or gen.tr etc. Not just ".tr". And in order to get a com.tr, you need to provide/fax legal papers for your company. So it maybe hard for a foreigner to get a com.tr domain.

Best luck with your venture. You can contact me if you have other questions

Some great information, thanks everyone. It definitely looks do-able.

However I just spoke to my AM and although the offer is available in Turkey, the offer's order page is only in English. The thing is I will be competing with people selling similar products from all Turkish language sites.

I can make a landing page in Turkish but just not sure how it will convert when the order page is in English...

The thing is there is loads of cash to be made with this. Think I will have to try.

One thing you could do is split test and track conversions, by creating:
    1. 1 landing page in English.
    2. 1 landing page in Turkish. Make sure you get a quality translation (not Google Translate), e.g. Craigslist, Odesk, onehourtranslation . com

If the order page is in English, you may be able to ask your AM if they can create a customized one in Turkish.

OK well i decided turkey was too competitive for now but have just registered a .br.com domain and am gonna try Brazil.

Domain name reg was easy using onlydomainnames.com who sort the legal stuff out about not being a Brazilian resident. By sorting out I mean I ticked a box and they did it automatically and instantly. Great service.

I had an article translated on fiverr and he seems to have done a good job although I am gonna run it past my friends wife who is Portuguese to make sure he hasnt cheated with google translate.

All in all pretty easy so far and the site indexed already.

The hard bit now. Trying to rank it.

Will try some portugese KW in english articles first off.
