Folks - I recently had a discussion with someone who wanted to rank a bunch of sites for clients real fast. He was talking in 30 or 35 days to get the client ranked. My explanation was along the lines of ranking real fast is not how I do SEO generally and would never recommend it.

For the churn and burn crowd that is absolutely fine and that group probably ranks as fast or faster than a month or so.

For long term rankings you do not want to skyrocket up in the rankings or there is a serious chance that you will drop to the earth like the apple that was the impetus for Sir Issac Newton's law of gravity.

Be smart, rank slowly and rank for long term benefits if you are working for a client or if you just want long term benefits for own sites.

You'll be glad you took your time for years to come.

Great piece of advice. Time is unpredictable in today's SEO.

Back in infoseek I used to guarantee 48 hour TAT. They used to re-rank 24 to 48 hours after you resubmitted to their index. Those days are long gone, we're in the Google monopoly domain now, where delaying SEO is sure fire way to sell more adwords. SEO's simply should not provide a time frame for results.

Mate, it all depends on the competition for the client's niche or keywords. That's all it comes down to.

If the client has 0 competition or is starting a niche by himself than rankings are fast, in under a week (I've done that with a client of mine who wanted to rank some sites in 0 search, 0 competition keywords that have since grown, and he's still ranking strong).

But if there's any hint of competition then, yeah, doing stuff the proper way will take a long time and it will require some investment but in the end you'll get there and be glad about it.

and yet so many are still confused with the fast and slow approach e.g.
    this current BST here
    Code:
    http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/seo-link-building/685785-serp-bastard-new-search-engine-optimization-strategy-discovered-seize-now-rank-fast.html
people need to know what the strategy is going to be before they start out.

Do all the necessary research, but most of all, have a GAMEPLAN in mind.

I agree to some extent, if the competition is high it will take some time to rank but 1 month is good enough period for the client to see good upward movement, which should satisfy that the site is going on the good route, but getting to say top 10 or top 3 for tough competitive keywords is possible but not safe in long term.

Agreed "see upward movement" but not be the big kahuna.

This particular guy was looking for big kahuna rankings in 30 days or less.

Hey, that could be a good ad slogan for a protein drink or some kind of why products!
