I was wondering if it is possible to rank a site for a keyword that is not 100% related to a site.

For instance, you have a site that is a local directory for pet sitting services. You find that the name of a local pet shop who advertises alot gets a good amount of search traffic in google.

How difficult would it be to get the site about local pet sitting services to rank for the name of the local pet shop? What kind of SEO would be needed to do this? Would writing articles on the pet sitting service site like, "The Top 10 Pet Shops in XYZ City", or a review of the local pet shop help.

Even if the traffic converts at a lower rate, I think that it would be a selling point to use when trying to sell advertising to pet sitting services.

How competitive is your website? How good are you at local SEO? It's difficult to answer this question without knowing about your site or the keyword.

What kind of SEO would be needed to do this?
If you have a local site and you want to rank for a local keyword, then local SEO would be your best bet.

It certainly could, although I've never tried this out for myself.

The best way to find the answers to these questions is to test them out either on your own site or on a disposable one. :)

It doesnt look like the niche is that competitive, some keywords are harder to rank then others, but I think they would all be considered relatively easy. I am currently using a service on BHW for SEO, and will work on some elements myself.

The site is directed at a specific state, and many of my keywords are a city in the state+keyword. I am not sure that local seo would apply since I am targeting multiple cities in the state, plus I do not have a business address to submit to google.

Is there a journey or how to thread you could direct me too for information about this sort of local SEO? I searched the forum, but couldnt find anything specifically related. Most threads I found seem to be related to a B&M business or a very targeted area.
