I'm running an eCommerce site, so not interested in rank and bank methods. I've been sitting at 5th or 6th for my main keyword and am considering moving up higher to get more visibility and as a result more clients.
Would purchasing an SEO service be recommended at this point, or should I work on creating content for my site and hope for the best in the long run?

There isn't much I can do in terms of "new content" since I only sell products. So there is no room for growth in terms of creating new pages and new content other than adding a news section and possibly hiring a writer to create bi-weekly articles in my niche or something.

Through competitor research, I found that the #1 and #2 spots both have 20,000 backlinks pointing to their site. Spots #3 and #4 have between 5,000-10,000 backlinks. And my site has about 250 total (did not use any blackhat methods in the past, these are all natural via affiliates and advertising.

I appreciate any feedback guys :)

Only thing to do is get more high powered links.

Also it's not the quantity but the quality of the links as well, so knowing "how many" links your competitor has will do nothing for you, and honestly doesn't really matter anyway.

Just build more high pr links and you'll be #1 in no time.

As the others mentioned, your best bet is blog posts on a private network or if even better go for authority links on news sites. Remember, its not always about the quantity as one link from the right(authority) spot may be all you need.

Instead of concentrating on the main keyword first catch the low hanging fruits. We generally get fixated on one big keyword where there are many low hanging fruits for which you can easily rank and they generally have better ROI plus they also help the main keyword.

Look at your keywords in webmaster tools and analytics and see where you are ranking well and getting sales, these would be generally long tail keywords, so its easier to rank. just keep on gettting your website to no 1 spot for these keywords, which should take only a couple of good links per keyword instead of worrying about your no 5 or 6 rankings, that is a decent ranking, but don't overoptimise your website only for one keyword.

In my opinion, you should do some product launch which can go viral. Other option is huge discount on particular item or any other online contest. If you can make it viral, it will give a lot of natural links thus boosting your rankings.

Even I recommend you get a couple of links from high quality blog networks. You'll find threads selling such a service in the marketplace of this forum.
