On one of my sites I am ranking #1 for a keyword that has 6600 exact searches a month. I have been at #1 position for a month but I have only received 14 visitors this month from people searching for this keyword,, How comes??

I am definatly ranking #1 as I have logged out of my google accounts and searched for the keyword and yes I do rank #1, I even checked on other peoples machines and my site does rank #1

    So why no traffic??

    Thanks

Or maybe it's geo targeted. If you're ranking in the US and most searchers are in the UK you won't be seeing as many visitors as you expect. Look at google insights to see if this is the case.

Also note that Google is now modifying KW results based on likes, previous clicks and pageviews, so if you view your own site you are now seeing it at the top. Refresh, clearl the cache and log out of Google then you'll see where your site really is! Also try different regions

    do you know?

That even though the google keyword tool is reporting that it has 6k exact searches. that could be entirlely wrong. why?

Because those numbers are taken from last years search engine searches and then reported by google on there keyword tool.

That keyword could only get 10 searches a month, using the google keyword tool is simply guesswork. it always has been and always will be.

Get your keyword tool and get ranking for long tail keywords, the more you rank the more you'll start to see traffic, don't just target one keyword, it may never get any visitors at all.

Also, make sure that you're actually #1. (i.e. you're not logged into your Google account, and it's making it appear higher than it actually is (they do this to me). Check it with a proxy or something.

Other things that could be wrong are what have already been mentioned, seasonal, incorrect KWT readings etc..

Go incognito and double check. If your logged into your own google account then that will alter the true rankings.

Does Google Webmaster Tools show you receiving around 200 search impressions per day for that keyword? Having a CTR below 1% for the top ranking is extremely unlikely.

The AdWords keyword tool provides traffic per month for the previous 12 months.

Make sure you add &pws=0 as well as a clean browser (no history), and using third party tools to actually check.

    Does GWT also show impressions?

Oh wow didn't know this. Any chance you have a better suggestion as to what to use as opposed to googles keyword tool?

    thanks for the feedback guys.

-I have cleared temp files / cookies and did search again and im still top, I even checked from other computers and even rank tracker

-The traffic is comming from USA and my site is USA

-Just checked webmaster tools and im getting no impressions for this keyword

-Checked google insights and it says "Not enough search volume to show graphs."

so i guess lesson learned, check keyword in google insights. Thanks for the feedback guys, im already chasing my next #1 (Documented in my other thread)
