how it can be done? I mean the off page.. it's a good move I optimize the keyword 'lyrics'?

my assumption is this can boost serp of upcoming song lyrics where I can put the title as "lyrics xxx by Rihana"..

    make sense or not?

There are too many authority sites for the keywords that have 'lyrics' in them. Often what you find is that the top 5 that are ranking for lyrics keywords don't build any backlinks but still rank high due to them having a high PR/being an authority site.

With the competition on the first page for this kind of website, you should aim to optimize each keyword phrase.

So is there no way to outrank an authority site? I figured you could do it with a strong enough off-site SEO strategy.

You can but the question is is it worth it? Can you make enough off the traffic to earn at least the $ investment needed to outrank?

I have a site in a similar niche where I did the same kind of thing, I out ranked for long tail keywords but it was nearly impossible to monetize enough to be worthwhile.

One tip: mobile. Do a mobile optimized version of the site (or use a plugin like WP Touch if on wordpress). Tons of iPhone/Android traffic. Mobile site, mobile sitemap. Maybe the top lyrics authority sites are doing that now. But a year ago I was able to get an edge with mobile optimization. The site makes enough to pay for itself and keep it around, but not enough to put any more effort into it.

Oh yeah, and then there's the problem that technically I guess you are supposed to license the lyrics. There's a site where you can do that but again...is it worth the $? If you don't, is it worth dumping the $ into ranking if there's the possibility you'll get DMCA'd.

Not saying that just because its challenging its not worthwhile, but might be better off investing the time, $, and effort into something less competitive with better monetization/profitability.

Well this keyword is a huge challenge. With the kind of competition you have, it would involve huge amount of SEO work and investment. So you will have to think about the future and work on the site and that keyword accordingly.

I would still say, do some keyword research and you will find tons of other low competition words. Work on those and you will gain more profits in long term.

try to use google translate to translate "lyrics" and you will know this keyword is not so scary as you've described..
