Had a website since 1997, and currently rank #1 for main keyword/domain-name, and #3-#5 on a few other keywords and pages. We are re-designing the website, and changing all the links, pages, keywords, everything. The website has no SEO whatsoever, other than a few keywords in the title tags, etc, small things. These keywords are highly competitive, our main keyword not so much... but as well, I still wonder how we are ranked so high.. There's really no many back-links at all. However I suppose the age has something to do with it, and it's listed in Google Places, directories, and is a business site..

I'm pretty much using the same keywords, but changing all the links, and pages, and adding a ton more keywords and changing the title descriptions. We have little unique content, if I add tons of new content, a new design/code and implement new SEO will the page vanish from Google and other search engines during the process of uploading the new site?

Cliffs: Building new site, removing old one, changing seo, will site vanish from search engines because it's all new?.. How can I prevent that if it occurs.

You might not notice immediate effects because you will stay at your current position until big G crawls your site again.

I have switched stuff over like that and got better rankings for the same keywords because of things I learned about on page optimization. Maybe one way to prevent it is get some anchor text backlinks with your targeted keywords in them.

You might not see much change but there is no way to be sure since nobody knows how the search engines work exactly.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

If your site is ranking high without a lot of off-site SEO work, you can assume its because of the on-site SEO. As long as you do not get rid of the good content, your rankings should stay OK. Try to avoid keyword stuffing. Just mentioning the keyword at the beginning and end of an article is enough for Google to understand it.

What I have noticed when I change sites over like that is that they will pick up in the results for about a month or so then die down a little bit....but with the site being so old..it's really hard to tell what will happen....however it needs to be done I'm sure...sites from 97 look way outdated ect.

It's hard to tell because your site is very old. However I had changed the title of the new site, it was ranking on the 1st page and when Google recrawls then my site dropped to 2nd page and after a little effort by building some backlinks then my site again come back to first page. Just avoid to change the title and meta details. However if you do not optimize your meta so then you should have to optimize it.
