He says he doesnt know what will happen if he used a dropped domain.

He says Google's webspam team probably bought dropped domains to penalize them already.

He seems to have no clue Godaddy sells these things.

In all seriousness though, it is no wonder he stepped down as CEO. I imagine he just says what his customers want to hear, but maybe he really is this dumb?

Is it at all possible he is so ill informed that he thinks that buying a dropped domain is a blackhat tactic?

If we run with that thought, that means every one who has ever bought a dropped domain should be removed from the index?

Because regardless of what you do with them, nearly every dropped/expired domain has a backlink profile which will forward link juice.

It could be argued that these domains simply ensure that your website will not be penalized since many dropped domains have terrible backlink profiles.

Buying 'dropped' domains, or domains that have not yet expired? I think buying a domain that was previously used is completely white hat. Especially if you're using it for a new purpose.

Now, buying a domain that's ABOUT to expire, putting up old content, in hopes of maintaining the PageRank? Well... that may be black hat. I'd just keep an eye on it -- Google gets the same expired domains list as everybody else, I'd be surprised if they don't crawl them a little more to see if they're going to a landing page, then returning to the original content. If they're not already, they surely will in the future.

@randfish bet that guy just sold a load more of them after you tweeted the URL :)
    @rikki_lear
Yeah, but probably at least 2 to members of search engine webspam teams

What a jokester... he actually thinks Google will buy every domain and penalize them?

    Depends how you do it...

if you are buying an expired domain and build something fresh then no, thats white hat.

If you are buying an expired domain, using cache's to rebuild the website with the intention of using it to pass link juice to something else then how is that not black hat?

In a time that you cannot even freely link or develop without being afraid that some penalty may hit you... soon everything will be considered black hat, even when done by someone that doesn't even know what that means. Call the police!

Edit: As soon as I posted this my usb hub stopped working (no keyb and mouse). What a coincidence :)

He popped a vein on Twitter today, I feel a little bad, but he is genuinely looking down on people like us and poking fun at us when he featured this tactic on his own site around 2009.

If there is one thing I can't stand it is a hypocrite.

I don't think he did. I think he was taking the piss out of the Domain membership site advertised in the thread on your forum.

LOL God did get trolled, but damn insulting someone because of their age is a pretty low blow. The fact that you haven't snagged one of those juicy domains for your private blog network is probably because you're still drinking that kool-aid bruh
