I finally decided to quite smoking cigarettes, I have 5 kids and I'm 31 years old and finally decided that my life, and being around for longer for my kids is more important, sounds funny right! but I guess that's what it comes down to, I have been smoking sense I was 9 years old. I wanted to ask you all if you where ever a smoker, and made the decision to quit, what helped you accomplish your goal quiting smoking.

I quit for good in 1990. I used the patches which were prescription only at the time but halfway through the course I said fuck it and didn't even need them anymore. I think I had just made up my mind that I was going to quit either way. The patches were a nice crutch for a while though. I would recommend them. Oh, and I was similar to you in age. I was 26 or 27 and had been smoking on and off (mostly on) since I was 11. One thing I really had to do though was cut way back on drinking since there was a huge connection for me with the two.

Good for you mate. My dad smoked for 40 years and the only thing that helped him quit is zyban pills.

Stop being a pussy bro. Thats the mantra I would tell myself daily as I thought about smoking every like 15 minutes :). I would just think about how I needed to stop being a pussy and minutes turned to hours, hours to days, and days to weeks. The craving is almost gone after a month but it takes a year or two to completely subside IMO. Cold Turkey FTW!

It was Friday at 3:20 AM Uk time on 30/12/2011 i got home from work went in the kitchen put macaroni and cheese in the microwave and grabbed my ipad and went in the toilet, i was one of them people that can only shit when they are having a cigarette and reading something. i lit my ciggy and opened facebook. a puff here and dump there until i seen RIP Stan, Stan was my boxing coach a 59 yrs old rock solid man but he was a heavy smoker, i couldn't believe my eyes so when i came out the toilet i immediately phoned a mutual friend and he confirmed the bad news and told me that he was told by Stans daughter that he had lungs cancer but they only knew 9 days ago. after that phone call i put that packet of Richmonds in the bin and never smoked since.
although i still smoke other things but no tobacco involved just pure herbs.

I know a a good few big time smokers who have all quit using Champix. I only really smoke when I go out for a drink, so never really thought about giving up.

Then you are unaware that pot smoking is also linked to lung cancer.

No bro, its only related to lung cancer when you smoke it combined with tobacco.
pot on its own has nothing to do with lungs cancer although there is rumors that it can cure it

I think you are confused. There is slight evidence that hemp oil and cannabis oil when taken, not smoked can help some cancers, and there is evidence to suggest that smoking raw cannabis can cause lung cancer. Do not forget, it is not just lung cancer, there are many other nasty lung diseases like emphysema which will kill you painfully and slowly. Your lungs are not there to ingest shit, no shit ingested into your lungs is a good thing. Ever looked at the state of a bong after a few rounds, that is the same shit lining your lungs.

Cannabis does not help anxiety, it may for a bit whilst your stoned, but it just goes round in a circle as it also increases anxiety. Best thing for anxiety is beta blockers, they do not have any bad effects like other prescribed tablets for anxiety.

Just ask yourself: WHY am I smoking???? One good reason you can justify to yourself, or your kids??
    Stop fooling yourself and quit.

I quit several times, the first time was the hardest, within a few days from quitting I already craved for cigarettes, but I could stand it. Few months later I was smoking again.
Second time I quit was easy to do. Overnight I told myself to stop smoking and I did stop. Easy as that. One thing: you have to be mentally ready for it to stop. You can glue your body full with patches, when your not mentally ready they will only fool you. When you're willing to stop, you don't need patches or pills, it's all in your mind.

    Good luck!

This thread will help me a lot. I will be able to come back to it every time I want to smoke a cigarette, and see all the people that have quit successfully and draw inspiration from them and their success.

Its been five years and to be honest the price of cigarettes and the fact that I would be killing myself slowly made no sense. I stopped on Jan 1 2008. Did it on will power and the thought what would be the difference between paying for cigarettes or hiring a hit man to kill myself. Decided to give life a chance hope you give life and your kids the same chance Tompots.

Switched to e-cigs, smoked it for a few months, and then I lost it. Bought another one, lost it within a few weeks. At one point I was too lazy to look for them and stopped smoking entirely.
