I just want to ask. I have 2 websites both ranking for same niche but different keywords, and I want to forward one domain to the other using a 301 (or any other redirection)

I want to know what effect this will have on my rankings, if any?

    Thanks

Also, thanks to Google Penguin, will this hurt any of my rankings?

Using a 301 will benefit the ranking of your website, especially if the other domain has already been established in your niche.

I have a website which was ranking on the first page and had my old domain (with several thousand backlinks) 301ing to it. The account the htaccess file containing the 301 redirect expired, and my site dropped to the third page. Once I restored the 301, my site jumped back again.

Nice. But what I need to know, is this:

Say ipadcases.com is ranking number 1 in google, and i decide to redirect it to ipadcovers.com, will ipadcovers.com still stay ranked number 1?

No, ipadcovers.com will disappear. 301 is a permanent redirect.. a way of telling Google that the website has moved.

It should start to rank well, but I wouldn't expect it to 100% transfer over.

Ok, how about 302 redirect or some kind of temp redirect? Basically what I want is Domain A to redirect to Domain B, but Domain A still needs to be ranking (easy keywords)

I think it can be done with a meta redirect, but pretty sure you're getting into cloaking then, since you're showing the search engines one thing and end-users another. Stay away from that!

One site will go goodbye and the other that you redirect to should stay the same.

Ah thanks for that. Luckily it's like the easiest keyword to rank for... so I don't see how I could lose any ranks tbh. But yeah, I understand how it can be bad for a competitive niche.
