Quick question about ranking

My keyword has 100k results which most seem to be irrelevant to what is being searched. Some of my websites have been up for a while and some are new and not ranked very well. Heres my question though: what is a good amount of backlinks to pay to get done? Is there a such thing as getting too much at one time? What will make my websites rank on the first page? Are backlinks all you need to get ranked good?

Sorry my questions are so vague, but I know nothing about SEO

It totally depends on your keyword phrase. The questions you ask indicate that you may not have done much (any?) keyword research or you should know what your competition is and have an idea of what it would take to beat them.

It can be dangerous to get too many links at one time but with the profile links they kind of trickle in so it's not very obvious. You also can split your order between keywords and sites depending on your needs.

To get an idea of what you need backlink wise, use the SEO Quake firefox plugin to see how many links your competition has. Make sure your keyword it worth targeting though. Ranking high for a keyword does no good if no one is searching for it.

Finally, you should try to get a variety of backlinks from articles, blogs, forums, social bookmarking, web 2.0 sites, etc. It looks more natural.

If you want to rank high for your keywords, then do the following:

1)Make sure your website is made using Wordpress.

Install XML Sitemap plugin, All In One SEO, and Akismet.

2)Trade links with other theme relevant blogs, and end up in their blogroll section.

I am beginning to decode Google, and so far it seems to be working for what I'm trying, which is also 100% whitehat.

I'm ranking on the first page for a keyword with 59 million competition (without quotes), and 847,000 competition (with quotes).
