As the title suggests, iv heard conflicting views on this...

example; you have a website on the finance niche... in theory could you take a handful of articles on this subject from article sites like ezine and articlebase and copy the article and put them on your site?

    1) would google see this as duplicate content?
    2) is there a limit ? you could create whole blog sites of hundreds of these articles?
    3) would these quality articles add value to your sites? or will they be ignored when it comes to serp increases?
    4) what applies to news sites? like the bbc, sky etc taking content from their and putting in your blogs?

They will add very little value,if a news site like sky or the bbc sees the articles and you're not listing them as the source, good luck with that. It's a pretty lazy approach if you ask me.You'd at least spin them.

    2) No limits, ofc you can create blogs with millions of these articles. It is possible
    3) Noone can say for sure, or atleast I cant
    4) What about it?

As the previous poster said, At least buy a good content spinner and spin the articles.
You will have more probabilities to rank better like this :)
Just make some SEO on you site too and you are good to go

yes it is obviously the duplicate, you would surely want to spin the articles before using them. I dont think someone would recommend this method. As far as the limit is concerned, when you are taking duplicate content so the limit is yours as well, as it content affect on your ranks much. lastly i would agree to the point mentioned above, the news networks provide the reference as well, even if they dont they got too many other things running in the background to boost their ranks that the content hardly matters.

It'd get tagged as duplicate content in a minute.

I've experimented extensively with both EZA and press releases and the articles quickly disapear, as if some of their robots keep checking for duplicate content 24x7.

Well this is the odd thing as press release articles are supposed to be shared and published on multiple sites so it doesn't make sense that by using them on your site they would be classed as duplicate content? I'm just trying to work out the logic that's all.

Ask yourself this question, would that content provide any value to anyone.... and that is google's position.

You might be deemed as an agrigator, similar to some news sites but that is a big might and you would have to be on top of a lot of trending topics, have a lot of pr etc to compete against the big guys.

If it was really that easy then everyone would just copy wikipedia and be rich by now

The google logic : they want you to buy adwords. That's all the logic there is on their part ;)

Yeah, press releases and news do get replicated, but google tends to move those out of the SERPs and into news.google. Press releases and such haven't helped me at all in a while now.

unless you are rewriting the articles , posting them to your blogs as it is won't give your site any value!

Press releases were targeted specifically by google for their apparent issues with the links. Many of the pr sites now use nofollow as well: searchengineland.c*m/google-links-in-a-press-release-should-be-nofollowed-like-advertisements-168339

Google thinks that if your press release is really amazing many people will share... and then do their own links... hahahaha

You can use the content for sure, but you have to list the site ( Ezine) in the source..so that they get the credit for the original article. and If you dont do that...you are bound to see one Duplicate Content penalty for sure :)

I wonder why would you want to use duplicate content on your site?

    1) Yes, Google does see these content as duplicate.
    2) Forget about limits. You'll hardly receive any traffic since those articles will be duplicate.
    3) Even if those articles are quality from a reader's point of veiw, in the Google eyes, scrapped articles are total garbage because the articles have been copied not just by you, possibly hundreds of times if not thousands have been copied by other scrappers. These copied duplicate articles are going to do more harm than adding any value to your site.
    4) Again, scrapped content are not good at all for your site regardless of their quality.
