Please I would like to know if it's necessary to create backlinks (i.e. social bookmarking) to a youtube video in order to rank it higher in the youtube search results or it's useless since videos are already located on a domain that has a huge pagerank?

    Gratitude to all answerers

Not really necessary. I have had success ranking YT videos to the first page without any backlinks. All you need is a combination of views, likes, comments, favorites and, of course, optimized title, description and tags. Also, it's much easier to rank quality videos as people will gladly watch those without leaving after the first seconds...
I may not be the so called expert when it comes to YT but these are the basic things that I did in order to rank my videos. And once you rank a video it feels so nice seeing that passive income! However, it takes a little time to rank a video depending on the competition.
    Good luck!

1 like/comment = a backlink from the users profile who liked/commented on it to your video

I find the most effective strategy is creating quality content that people will like, so you get internal backlinks from Youtube

This is what I always do:

    - Content is the king (a great video spreads virally, not only with SEO)
    - I use the main keyword as name of the file.
    - I start the title with the main keyphrase, and I continue it with a click stimulating phrase.
    - I choose a click stimulating image as thumbnail
    - I optimize the description with the proper keywords
    - I optimize the tags (without keyword stuffing)
    - If people like my content I get many likes, faves, comments and views from the beginning, otherwise I use Vagex

    and then...

    - I submit my video to Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Diigo, Delicious, etc.

These submission certainly bring direct traffic BUT I wonder if they also help with the ranking of the video. This is what I'm very curious about

    My understanding:

    - Google search: Normal SEO activities to rank a YouTube video in the SERPs like when ranking any other website.

    - YouTube search: Only related to YouTube activity including the number of views/likes/comments/viewer engagement (do viewers watch it for more than 5 seconds) and any links inside of YouTube such as through video commenting as well as all the tags/descriptions etc. An external URL pointing at a YouTube video (let's say the New York Times linked to your video) will do nothing to improve the ranking within the internal YouTube search engine. However, the traffic that follows that link and views your video will :)

Halleluja, that so needed to be said! This and other forums are boiling over with people who spend huge amounts of time and money on buying backlinks for youtube videos, followed by them posting disenfranchised threads asking why on earth their videos aren't ranking.

Youtube CHANNELS are a different story though - backlinks can actually help rank your channel in Google search, but like DrEvil123 stated, backlinking yt videos will do nothing.

SEO isn't what it used to be, and ever since Google purchased YT, social proof is gradually taking over as SEO king.

You don't need backlinks to rank high in YouTube.
if you build backlinks ur video will rank in google, not in YouTube.
to rank high in YouTube, you need to optimize ur video, and get views. U can either buy views or use bots. Lastly, likes, sub, fav, comments will help on ranking high in YouTube.

just uploaded my first video a week ago so i'm no expert but here's what i've seen first hand..

i'm on the first page of YT for my search term. it climbed up from page 10 over the week, as views were being added.
    - views from spk's ************
    - comments & likes bought from fiverr

video's on the second page of G (just got there today, prior to this, was waaaay back on pg. 20+)
    - social bookmarking, AMR, senuke, scrapebox blasts all directly to the video (can also purchase on fiverr if you don't have these tools)

A little tip that i do is i write my keyword 3 times under my description!
    so for example

    description description description description description
    description description description description description
    description description description description description

    Keyword
    keyword
    keyword

I used to do this with videos that i knew they will not last so long online so i dont know if this technique is good for "longterm" videos :) Just saying !
