So I am wondering if page speed score matters when the site speed load time is 2.9 sec which is fast.

Say the page speed score is 59% and speed load time is 2.9 sec....is there any need to optimize the page speed score?

Earlier Google used to devalue pages with considerably low loading speeds. 2.9 seconds would have worked fine.

Now with mobile index first, page speed has more importance. Try to get closer to 80% or better in Google page speed insights tool.
And faster loading time translates to better user experience.

I would optimize. I would certainly try to get it under 1.5s if you can. Main things to look for would be images.
