I know this is the image used next to the title when people bookmark a site but I keep seeing in my website statistics that it has been downloaded along with a couple of images.

Am I correct in thinking that this is an indication that the site has been bookmarked?

The reason I'm a bit confused is I see it happening so often, I think it might be the case that the image is downloded automatically, regardless if the site is bookmarked or not.

In order for a visitor to see your website their browser automaticaly downloads the favicon.ico.

That is correct. New browsers automatically download the favicon. If you don't have one on your website you'll see a bunch of errors in your error_log for a missing favicon.ico file. Has no bearing on the number that bookmark your page.
