If I were a noob, I would say your first objective is to learn how to get a tiny site to the #1 spot for that keyword on Google.

Learn how to research a niche keyword and figure out what's easy to accomplish.
Learn how to build and optimize a site with SEO
Get an adsense account and learn how to optimize that.
Learn how to get a site ranked through backlinks, etc.

Once you've done that, do it again with a harder keyword.

I would suggest the first thing you try to figure out is how you want to earn and where your traffic is going to come from - Adsense, Ebay, ewhoring, Amazon, Facebook, list building? Then figure out if you need a website, craigslist ads or email marketing.

My first attempt at blogging was completely wrong. I bought the domain name, hosting and started blogging without figuring out if i was in the right market and had the right keywords. If you are gonna blog or build niche sites, figure out what you are going to make money off of and then research your keywords and then get your domain name and website.
