    Hi guys

I was wondering if anyone knew a bit about trademark / copyright laws regarding domain names. I have recently purchased a domain name and uploaded a site that has the word 'Twitter' in the name, and was wondering if this was against copyright or trademark laws to have this site without Twitter's permission.

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks :)

I owned a domain name that had the company name UPS in it. I got some very unpleasant emails and UPS envelopes from their legal department.

I no longer own that name.

How long after owning the domain name and having your site online did they start sending you these emails and letters?

Was it doing pretty well for itself when they started?

May I ask what they threatened you with?

This exact topic has been discussed more times on BHW than I care to remember and a simple search would have shown that.
If you own a domain that has a trademark in it and the owner of the mark finds out, you will lose the domain at some point.
Just use the uspto dot gov website and search for the trademark.

I had it for about 3 months and was only making about 450.00 - 500.00 per month. It had nothing to do with the revenue... they didn't want that... they did not want their Image/trademark diluted.

I got 1 email which I ignored. Three days later the UPS guy was delivering a stern letter to my office and about half an hour after I signed for the envelope, I got another email.

It took me about 4 minutes to realize I didn't want to spend money in litigation fighting them and just turned the domain name over to them.

If you type the name in now it says "502 Bad Gateway Host Not Found or connection failed"

Apologies loclhero, you're probably right, I'm just panicking a little here.

Would you guys suggest I ride it out or just pack it in right now? I'm thinking I could maybe try for a few months to see what happens, or would it be stupid to even try?

    Cheers.

I wouldn't bother doing that again as I like to build my sites for the long term. You could try and make some quick cash with it... maybe monetize it with adsense or something but at some point you will probably see any work you put into it be gone.

Ok, I understand that. I'll try riding it out until they should find out, see what I can do with it, in the knowledge that it won't always be there. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it very much.

I might move it over to something similar in the distant future that's still visible as something for Twitter but without the name in the title. For example, my current domain is www...............twitter.com and I think I'll change to www...............tweet.com . I should be ok with that.

    Thanks again.
