    Hi,

I switched from one scrip to another script on a large site. and today Google Webmaster Tools gives warning of several thousand 404 errors because they try to follow the old URLs that don't exists any longer.

There is a new sitemap submitted to Google and the new urls are already indexed.. so should I just wait until Googl deindex the old urls or stop to try to follow them or is there anything I can do?

I already put up a 404 error page where visitors can click on HOME to go to the main page.

    Any suggestion please?

Create htaccess redirects from the old URL to the most appropriate new URL. There are numerous online tools for generating the files: http://www.htaccessredirect.net/

There are also numerous youtube tutorials:

Thanks good tip I already have all this installed, but there are maybe 7000 or 8000 urls. redirecting these all manual is not going to work. maybe they should just be allowed to expire or something..

It will take a year for google to give up on them as 404s... You either need to redirect them or configure them to return as 410 response codes so google knows they are never coming back and gives up on them faster.

ahh, that may work.. this means I just have to make an htaccess on the domain where they are comming from and do the 410 response code.

If those url's are having some certain url structure then you can 301 redirect it via htaccess easily to any particular page or respective page otherwise it will be hard.
