I am working on a micro site and im going after the 2nd biggest keyword in my micro niche, im currently on page 2 for it. It gets around 300K searches broad and around 50K exact per month.

However while doing some research I found out that im ranking on page 2 for a similar keyword. Now this similar keyword get around 2.5 million searches broad, but only 6K exact. My question is:

If I can work on this "similar" keyword and I get my site to rank top 3 for the keyword should I expect to get a good % of the 2.5 million searches from the broad searches or will I only get traffic from the 6K exact.

    Many thanks friends.

Well It depend upon many other factors

1- Position 1 will get 60% ,Position 2 will get 50% and Position 3 get 40% of exact
2- Traffic mainly depend upon in which country you rank on 1st page
3- You will get 80% of exact when u possibly top in all countries.

    Hope u got idea !!!

Thanks for your input. However I was more curious as too if I would get any where near the kind of broad traffic (2.5 million) when/if I am ranked 3rd or better.

I know if I was ranked top 3 I would at least get 3K traffic from exact keyword that has 6K searches in exact, but what about the 2.5 million that is broad.

    Cheers bro

    Maybe my thinking is different....

Exact match is great when determining how to rank/outrank for a specific keyword..

But in terms of traffic (borad/exact)

Me Personally, i look at broad traffic when talking about "potential clicks and potential amount of people you can be in front of"

Honestly, what regular person searches google with "quotes"....

in that respect, i think exact traffic is horrible in determining potential clicks or anything..

When doing actual KW research, in MS u should have filters off, broad search, daily...(the broad results are actually the results if you inputted your word in quotes in google, if im giving bad info, sorry i havent played with MS for a while)

this will tell u the true amount of traffic, daily, the number 1 spot will potentially get if it received all the clicks..

But thats just me...if im wrong so be it :)

Just because your number 1 for your "keyword" doesnt mean the same holds true when you type into google, keyword,...

8/10 people on the interent, when searching for something in google, dont put "quotes"...

So while i respect exact match results when determining everything else in KW research...When it comes down to "reality" it cant be relied upon..

    Lets wait for GreyWolf :)

Cyrsss @ That article makes a lot of sense. So I guess in order to get the traffic of 2.5 million I would have to rank top 3 for all sorts of various combination of my keyword (1000 or 9999 I think).

This isn't the correct definition of exact match.

    Example keyword: money online

Exact match means that the person entered just 'money online' (without quotes!) in Google. While broad means that someone could enter any of the below keywords:

    make money online
    how to make money online
is there really money on the online
    making money online doesn't work

or any other combination. These are broad.

While phrase matches are when the phrase is used in the search. Examples from above:

    make money online
    how to make money online
    making money online doesn't work

    Hope that clears it up.

NEREVAR @ Thanks for clearing that up. That is how I have understood it as well.

Have you ever ranked top 3 for a 1 million + broad search keyword that maybe only gets 20K exact and seen like 300K visitors to your site (coming from the broad aspect of the keyword).

Nr 1 is BS. Position 1 will get you 40%, the rest is worse. I think pos 3 gives you around 10%.

I get his math though, eventhough it's not right. He probably thinks people click the nr 1 and nr 2 website both, and some don't. But if you're number 1 and you have good content they'll never go to the nr 2.
