I beg my pardon if this is in the wrong place
Made probably the worst mistake of my life and bought one of my first domains from GoDaddy with their $1 .com lure with a $19 renewal.
The domain ended up being a great asset and I couldn't risk losing it.

If anyone has any info/experience in this, I would highly appreciate it:)

.com expired on the 11th of July. Currently, in the grace period, which ends tomorrow, the redemption period starts on the (22nd of July). Meaning that if I would want to have my domain back after the redemption period starts, I would have to pay their $80 fee + their $19 renewal.
In the process of transferring my domain far away from them, but I read that domain transfers usually last 5-7 days which would technically go over the grace period, but I'm left wondering if it counts as something that I would have to pay them their $80 fee.

Contacted GoDaddy's support and they kept refusing to answer my question and even said that I would have to pay their $19 domain renewal so that I could even transfer my domain, as they said "You can't transfer your domain until you renew it"... which I found false by making a 5 second Google search.
  • You can still transfer an expired domain, if it's still in the grace period and not in redemption status.
(From their own website. They were also fully aware that I was in the grace period.)

Just wanted to make sure I don't risk losing $80. Might be a silly question.

Your domain is in a grace period which means it is already expired and can be renewed by the current registrar only. This rule is from the ICANN and you cannot move your domain until it is active. So, you first need to renew the domain with GoDaddy, and then you have to wait for 60 days after the renewal as per the ICANN policy.
there is no policy in ICANN to transfer the domain after it is expired. Godaddy or any other registrar cannot deny this policy.
I don't know why Godaddy mislead people by stating

Many thanks for the help!

I'm just a bit overwhelmed as a beginner as a lot of the information they give go crisscross each other.

Also, I was able to receive the domain transfer authorization code + the registrar where I would be moving the domain shows that the domain is indeed transferable.

then try to transfer out the domain without paying for the renewal and if it doesn't transfer then as per ICANN you have to renew the domain with Godaddy and then wait for 60 days and then only you can transfer to any other registrar of your choice.

I recommend Namecheap

That's exactly what I was going to do, but I'm a bit worried that it would count as going over the grace period (as domain transfers usually take 5-7 days), and I would have to pay their $80 fee. I'm not in the financial state of paying that much for a fee over a domain.

I'll definitely check out NameCheap! I was initially going to go over to NameSilo.

Godaddy has an option to approve the domain transfer which speeds up the transfer process, I hope you will be able to transfer out within 1 to 2 days
Big thanks!
