    Hello,

I have a really big problem, I am getting many different answers and I do not really know the real truth. So, I would be very thankful if someone would clearly explain this to me.

I've got an .com domain 1 week ago and I am looking to do quality SEO. Problem is that I do NOT want to rank for my keywords on google.com, but I want to rank ONLY on google.co.in, and only for India, not for any other country. I have changed Geotargeting using Google Webmaster Tools to India. Is that enough to start competing only on google.co.in?

Many people tell me that I have to create brand new .in domain if I want to compete on indian google. Also, many people told me that I have to create indian backlinks to compete on google.co.in. Is that true?

I do not want my links to spread on google.com because it is high competitive, I only want to compete on google.co.in. What is your advice, should I buy a new .in domain and hosting in india or .com is good after i changed geotargeting to India in Google Webmaster Tools?

I am going for position 1 on google.co.in for low competitive keywords which are high competitive keywords on google.com

Any suggestion, advice and reply is welcome! Thank you very much in advance.

You don't have to register a .in domain to rank in google.in
You are good to go by changing in google webmaster tools.
I had a .com domain i want to target my country.

I saw significant changes when i change my webmaster tools setting to my country.
I was on #1 on US Google on my search term, and #10 in my country.
I do the changes is webmaster tools, i become no.1 in my country within 2 weeks.
But i do drop my ranking in google.com. It doesn't affect me as i am targeting local business.

In term of backlink just build normal is enough though building on .in domain will help much more.
Keep your anchor related to your country. Example your keywords is "Dog Training"
Try to keep your anchor text "Indian Dog Training, Dog Training in India,Dog Training Indian, Training for Dog In Indian"
Hope my advice help you .

Thank you very much for helping me.

So, your final advice is to stay with .com and keep link building?
Is there any fear that my backlinks will be spread and wasted for ranking on google.com instead of targeted google.co.in? Because with the budget I have, I can never rank on google.com for my niche, but I can rock on google.co.in.

What is the difference, do I need much more backlinks on .com domain to rank high on local google than with ranking local domain?

Do you know about adding language tag in header for better geotargeting?

Thanks for advice about anchor text, will do that.

You definitely don't need to get a new domain. A .com domain will rank well in any geographic location as long as it's clear that this location is the target audience.

I tried to rank a .net and a .in in India a couple years ago and the .net actually ended up ranking a little better. The factors that made the biggest impact for my rankings for a specific country have always been:

    1) having links from sites that are about India-related topics, sites whose audience is mainly from India and also sites which are hosted on Indian servers
    2) making it blatantly clear to the crawlers that your site is directed at an Indian audience through basic on-site SEO

There's a big debate going on whether to use to not to use geographical domains to target that particular country, some people say they're better and easier to rank while others mention that it doesn't really matters.

But what I believe is that as you have already registered the .com domain, stay with it. Focus on building high quality backlinks and proper marketing and you will notice the rankings improving in the search engine automatically.
