ok, there is a search term that one of my old websites is semi-optimized for and i have never built any backlinks or anything for it. the search term has a monthly volume of 670k. the number one site in google only has 8 backlinks but like 90k pages. would it be easy to outrank them if i build a bunch of backlinks? the other term my site has in the url has put me on the first page of google (number 7). i think i can easily get to number one for that.

i have done mostly craigslist and stuff like that. i don't have much experience in whitehat seo. sorry if this is a noob question.

HELL Yeah!
That keyword looks super easy, it doesn't makes a difference that the other site have 90k pages!

2 ways :
  1. Be better than the competitor (build backlinks etc...)
  2. Be nastier than the competitor (negative SEO etc..)

Better way would be the backlink building solution as it will be useful for using with other complementary niche sites

For 670k exact searches I think you should invest some more time rather than on that one site. What are you using to analyze you're competition?

That could just be a spur of the moment site that will bounce back down in the serps behind all the crazy high ranking authority demons that was under it.
