Question about link building

This might be a weird question, but can I build my links first and then input content - does it matter?

Like all I have right now is my domain registration and the keywords that I know I will want to SEO for - but I haven't gotten my content aka. articles yet.

I do this all the time, I think it is a good idea. Then when you do add content you already have traffic. I usually try to put up some page though. Like a Title Tag and maybe a coming soon H1 tag or something. I wouldn't expect to be ranked on page 1 with no content, but building links doesn't hurt.

If you aren't going to have a quick turn around though I would probably focus on building the site. When I speak of this I have my team build links to a site while I work on the content.

Not Only that your site isnt even indexed yet and you want to build BL? ahahha

please heed the warning....

Get your content in order before building BL. CONTENT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING

Focus on one thing and then move onto the next....

Dont rush steps in SEO...Do every step to its potential and then move on from there....

Even if you start link building before planing to buy domain have no negative effects.

Consult others also, sometimes I may be wrong also.

I have seen some directories/ sites fetching the datas from URL u submit rather than taking the datas u give (other than URL), in that case that site keeps the data as such, may be they only do it once and not update. In that case, submitting before developing the site wont be a good idea. I dont remember a specific site, but I have seen it somewhere.

Do the content first! There's a good chance as you start developing the site you will want to reorganize the content; happens to me all the time. No sense in having a link go to the wrong keyword page.

Dude, content will be added for sure, not now later, thats what Ed4252 was asking.

No meaning in waiting for content and if he waits, this will waste his time to work for that site. That time can be used for link building.

He was asking whether that way things work as he did not have his content ready.

True, but he can create backlinks to homepage for sure. Anyway he is not going to change that.

And building BL before you even have content is NOT SMART and NOT GOOD SEO..

but why listen to me right?

If you have no content Google theoretically should not count those links since the whole basis of ranking a website according to links is the premise that a link is like a vote from someone who likes the content on the site. The more links "the more people like the website (so it should rank higher because the content is good and helpful)"

With no content how can those links possibly be people 'liking' your website?

So in theory the links don't count.

However I've never verified this theory, experimentation is the only way to find out.

Home page won't change but the keyword focus could change! It's has happened to me due to poor planning and some new insights into my niche.

Your points are correct man. This is the normal way you should work with a site, I agree 100%.
First onpage then to offpage. So content needed first.
These days google give less leverage or importance(I said less not little) to onpage.

I have a site on 6th page of google for a KW, I have only installed WP, not even a post, oops some hello world default WP post is there. I wonder how google show that site in the 6th page if it would have checked onpage SEO factors.

Anyway as craigslistguy said its always better to add content first.

You could have added content and had perfect onsite seo (MINIMAL WORK) and after all your articles got indexed you would be page 1-2 at least (in a matter of a week or so)

You get there and start bulding backlinks and you WONT do that big of a google dance and you will be able to sustain your postion!

"PR DOES NOT EQUAL TRAFFIC"

For the slow out there, He (the case study guy) didnt put any content on his website, and while he attained PR3 he still didnt recieve ANY traffic, and why is that you might ask?

Yes its in 6th page, its a Micro Niche Site - not a big site.

I agree to that also man. One of my site (not the above said) was in 10th page for a KW, that too was having no content only WP. After adding a single post, in the next week it came to first page.

It indexes every 5 min.
It took google some days to index man no minutes, I wanted google to index automatically, so I did nothing. Daily morning after waking up I check whether that has been indexed or not, and after some 7-10 days they indexed I guess.

Yap true man, his site have PR according to the article, if he adds content it will shoot it to a good place in Google. Google gives a better spot to that site if it have good PR.

I agree with the above ^ wouldnt spend that much on building links etc if there isnt any content on your site yet! Would be better to have some basic content as a starting block and just develop it over time.

Besides, will google even count a backlink (once it finds it) if the page/site it is pointing to has no content? Why would it? So, imho, backlink building time wasted. I would at least add some content about the page/site, even if it's quickly thrown together, or even copied, so the link has at least somewhat of a reason of linking there in the first place. You can then go back and repost later with quality content.
